The starting point
The hotel is located in Bottrop — the model city of InnovationCity Ruhr, which has transformed into a low-energy city with the goal of becoming climate-neutral by 2035. Within InnovationCity, over 300 projects were initiated, 241 of them realised, with investments of around €732 million. The property did not want merely to claim this orientation but to make it visible and verifiable — as the basis for a clear, unmistakable profile.
Name & brand: „Hotel Blauer Himmel“
NOWA developed the name and the brand identity specifically for the Bottrop location: „Hotel Blauer Himmel“ (Blue Sky Hotel) — Bottrop's InnovationCity hotel. The name translates the concept's guiding idea (the „blue sky over the Ruhr“) into a brand that stands for sustainability and rest and clearly sets the property apart from interchangeable houses. For us, developing a concept also means the right naming and a sound brand framework.
The idea: a house that mirrors its city
The concept translates the transformation into architecture and design: outside, a green eco-building with a solar roof; inside, „blue sky“ corridors and green, planted rooms whose walls work with real plants and verifiable climate facts. A consistent brand sound — „Sustainable. Natural. Restful.“ — runs across façade, corridor and room.
Solar: from cost to earner
A complementary solar concept makes the promise technically real. Two routes are open: lease the roof to a partner who plans, finances and operates it (roof rent plus cheap green power, without own capital) — or an in-house system with self-consumption and storage (full savings plus feed-in tariff and tax advantages, financeable through subsidised loans). Energy costs fall noticeably, and the hotel roof turns from a cost into an earner.
Credible, not advertised
Advertising climate terms will be strictly regulated in the EU from autumn 2026. The concept therefore relies on concrete, verifiable facts and a recognised third-party seal instead of blanket promises — solar power from the roof, less grid electricity, green rooms. This guards against greenwashing accusations and makes the positioning robust.
The result
The hotel was successfully leased; the concept is being implemented over the years. An interchangeable city hotel becomes a property with a clear profile — visibly sustainable, cheaper to run and firmly anchored in its city's identity.
What transfers
Sustainability pays off most when technology (solar, efficiency), design (a visible eco profile) and communication (verifiable facts, a seal) work together. For owners and operators this means: a credible green profile lowers costs, differentiates in the market and increasingly feeds into financing and value.
